It is a common problem among AO Smith water heater users and it can drive you crazy, especially in the middle of the night. You should rest easy because soon you will understand every part of this beeping issue and also what you can do about it.

Your AO Smith water heater is beeping, but what does that mean? If your water heater is beeping, it means there’s an error. This may not be a major problem, but you should always inspect your water heater to ensure it’s in proper working order.

The first thing to do when your AO Smith water heater is beeping is to determine where the noise is coming from. Then that will guide your next step to fixing the beep.

Possible Reasons for Beeping AO Smith Water Heater and How to Fix It

The beeping noise may indicate that there are problems with the water heater or its power source. You need to determine the cause of the problem to troubleshoot it, and then fix it if possible. Here are some causes of beeping:

1. Water pressure switch malfunction

This is a common reason water heaters beep. The pressure switch can become faulty if the water is not turned off properly, if it doesn’t have enough air or if there is too much pressure on it. In most cases, this can easily be fixed by adjusting the pressure switch or replacing it altogether.

2. Low or empty tank

This is the most common reason that a water heater beeps. If the tank is less than 1/3 full, you will hear a beep when you turn on the hot water or when you try to get warm water from a tap. The beeping can also occur if the tank runs out of water while you are using it.

If there is not enough water in the tank, it will trigger an alert so that you know to refill it before running out altogether. This is also known as “tank dry” protection, which protects your appliance from damage caused by overheating due to dry circumstances.

3. High-temperature limit exceeded

The high-temperature limit is the highest temperature at which the appliance will allow itself to be heated. They designed most water heaters to reach a maximum temperature of around 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius).

If the temperature exceeds this threshold, the unit will sound an alarm and shut off. The beeping signal is an effort by the appliance to let you know that there has been a problem with your water heater.

4. Circuit board failure

If there is an issue with the circuit board of your water heater, it may start beeping instead of heating your home’s hot water supply. In this case, the beeping may stop once you turn off the breaker switch or flip off your breaker box for you to perform some troubleshooting tests on your unit.

5. A Leak

A leak is the most common reason for a beeping water heater. When there is a leak, the gas valve will cycle on and off to maintain pressure in the tank. If you have a gas water heater, this means that you will hear a beep every time the gas valve cycles on and off.

If you’re not sure if your water heater is leaking, here are some ways to check:

  • Check for water around the base of your water heater. If there is any standing water at all around your unit, we recommend having it checked immediately by our technicians. Leaks can cause rust and corrosion inside your unit and damage to other parts of your home because of moisture buildup.
  • Check for wet spots in your basement or crawlspace where the exhaust pipe connects to the outside of your home. If there are wet spots here, it could mean that there is a leak in this area as well.

How to Reset Electric AO Smith Water Heater

If the temperature of your hot water is lower than usual, or if you are not getting any hot water at all, try resetting your water heater. Reset your electric AO water heater in the following steps:

Turn off the circuit breaker

The first thing you need to do is turn off the circuit breaker that controls your water heater. This will make sure there is no power going through your home’s electrical system.

Verify if the water heater is disconnected from the power source

Next, you need to verify if the water heater is disconnected from the power source. Most electric water heaters have a red wire, a black wire, and a ground wire that connects to the water heater. These wires should be disconnected from each other and pulled out of the knockout holes on top of the water heater. If it’s not, then disconnect it as it can cause an electrical shock or fire hazard.

Unscrew the top panel

There’s a panel located at the top of the water heater. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the nuts to get the panel open.

Press the red button

After you open the panel, you will find a packed white foam. Pull the foam pack from the sides to remove it. then locate a red button behind the foam. Press this red button to reset the water heater.
